Thoughts Of A Guy Named Mason

Actionable Fear

Last week, one of my teachers told me;

Don't let your fears hold you back in life. Because I know you are capable of great things and you will go through with them

This is sticking with me a lot.

Upon first hearing this, when I was overwhelmed and angry at the world I related it to something a teacher had told me in year 3;

Resilience

The point was to teach me to navigate chaos. Did not work, the implementation that got the teacher to stop mentioning it to me - which 8 year old me thought meant success - was bottling emotions and chaos up. Does not work, skip to the part where you question everything and slowly defuse listening to music in the dark.

A few years of not seeing that teacher again and I realised what I just explained. Resilience in that way wasn't sustainable. Ignoring my fears isn't sustainable.

So here the key is not ignoring but accepting the things that make me overwhelmed and anxious.

The oxford definition for courage is;

The ability to do something that frightens one; bravery.

So lets say success is a metric of courage.

Therefore I can arbitrarily assign accepting and navigating fears as the correct things to do. Making something tangible and actionable from anxiety.
