Big Tech
there are lots of critisims of modern technology and big tech that are all very valid and I agree are not things that should be problems. However, psychologically what happens when a tool isnt up to quality standards or is too inconvienient to use is that people just do not use it. This phenomena apears with a lot of people who are critical of these big tech systems, and anyone coming from older technologies from before capitalism plagued the technology industry with the problems of endless scroll and privacy abused and software designed around extracting money out of people. For someone aware of all of these, they become friction points in modern software. If i open a website and im given multiple popups i decide its not worth wasting anymore time on that website. If i open instagram and I see nothing of substance on my home page I get bored because my mind has been trained to not be turned on by mind numbing dopamine 'slop'.
so, this feels like a very good thing for this group of people, from a selfish standpoint it does just mean less of our time is wasted making money for mark zuckerberg or contributing to newsletter signup analytics on whatever random outlet. But then from the entire other perspective, this phenomena creates a distance between the people aware and actioning things to mitigate these problems with the designs of these systems from the actual victims of the system.
I heard recently that Meta settled a law suit for $17Billion on a payment plan(roughly 10% of their revenue, i forget if gross or net) and a list of meaninful items actionable to all child meta accounts including strict time limits and that is all I remember but there were other things. And as Meta works on rolling out these changes, they are also now arguing that all other social media platforms should too, marvelous. All I have to say is that this is an excellent first step.
