Dumb Phone
My limited research on the topic of digital minimalism is to seperate each device to do its thing, instead of a 1500 dollar do-everything machine in your pocket its a 100 dollar communication tool and a 50 dollar mp3 player and a 5 dollar notepad and pen.
Which is already a thing i try to do; I only use social media on my computer and it is so inconvenient to scroll a feed on there i just cant bring myself to do it even as a way to pass time. i currently use my phone for
- texting / phone calls
- and googling stuff
- reading blog posts via rss feed
an true dumb phone will heavily reduce what i can do with my phone to
- texting / phone calls
a very different lifestyle change. Now, i still need whatsapp for work so i do still need to have a smartphone to use that, but i dont need to use it for anything else?
I genuinly prefer the thunderbird desktop app over the android one so i should be fine only checking my emails on my computer(s)
I can export my rss feed and set it up on a service on my computer or tablet once i get that working.
google is on litterally every other device i own, Heck for some reason i can use google on my tv, so ill be fine with that.
Tackling the first thing in the process, the phone itself, which seems to be the epicenter of most digital minimalism ive seen discussed. I am thinking a purple Nokia 235. I have found a refurbished one at an australian refurbished phone retailer CellMate for 90 dollars which is in the realm of i can just buy it.
The reason I chose this is because, well whatsapp isnt on kai Os anymore is it? Kai os is an operating system built ontop of what used to be firefox os, which is designed to only run web apps i think in a similar way to pwa.
Additionally choosing a phone with Kai Os or even Android Go is sort of just like, too much? i dont need all of the features as i have alternative ways to use google or to check my emails.
The Nokia 235 is a true dumb phone that also plays mp3s, so i dont need to get a new mp3 player or try and make my old ones battery last more than an hour.
- Text messages and phone calls
- It has the snake game on it acording to the marketing material
- It plays mp3s and radio
- It has bluetooth so i can keep my bluetooth headphones
- a 2MP camera I dont think it has video tho thats fine
- The marketing material says it is built to withstand being dropped
- it comes in purple
The end
So that is a pretty easy decision once i outlined what function i need and what it offers
The next complication is a watch, a few years ago i got a samsung galaxy watch something for christmas. The battery still last 2 days and what features do i use on it?
- Telling the time
- Occasional text messaging
- Occasinal step tracker
- Stopwatch for counting how long im out cycling because the built in tracker is horrible and ends each session after your 2 minute break, it feels like that anyway
- NFC wallet
So what do i need from a watch?
- To tell the time
- to have a stopwatch
Cool. I can carry around my wallet, thats easy enough.
Now options seem to only be 50 dollar fitness trackers from big w or an actual analouge watch and just also get a stopwatch?
...
Hmm, a seperate watch that just tells the time then?
And my tablet, which is currently soft locked by corupted firmware that wont even let me get to download mode to reflash it. This happened when i tried and failed to install twrp to get a custom rom on it because at the time i hadnt used it in over a year so it may as well have been a test ground?
But i have a use for it now, watching videos, If i can find a nice alternative youtube client that blocks ads, or at least if i can detect it ads over 15 seconds (today i opened youtube on my tv which doesnt have an adblocker ad and i got a 1 minute long ad so instead i spent even more time finding a hdmi cable in a box and plugging my laptop into my tv) or something like that.
I just need to go to a phone repair shop and get them to open it and reflash the storage with firmware with a fancy 2 thousand dollar machine i cant get and do myself.
Excellent, I like where this is going.
