New friend
How do I comfort someone? Is that even the thing I should do in this situation? I can listen, and of course I did, but that was because I didn't know what else to do. I guess this is in fair part because I haven't known them long enough to situate myself with the intricasies or how they behave and what makes them feel better and what is too much to handle.
i feel anxious that my new friend doesnt want to be my friend. but i also know that i am overthinking and being too hard on myself. because from an objective standpoint and also what i can understand of them perspective i have been supportive and trying to help them when they has a mental breakdown. I dont blame them, i do it to, but i just dont know what to do.
i told them that 'its okay' this morning when they where overwhelmed. and they said "no its not. thats the voice that teachers give to kindergarten students its not honest". now... in fairness it is, the voice is soft and initiated by the thought that silence would be worse. so now that ive simply stated that it is obvious to me that silence is better, even if putting on a soft voice and saying something generically comforting conveys the message that you are there and that everything will be fine, which i guess is also what a teacher is thinking when they talk to a kindergarten student. I guess then what I always do is the best thing I can do? sit and listen and offer advice when it is seeked. But I should note that when I am having a mental breakdown I don't know what I want others to do but skipping straight to words before venting is probably the wrong sequence of events.
