Nothing is original
Imperfect's public feedback loops. Which I feel like is not his first post on the topic. Quotes a quote of a quote;
“Nothing is original… all creative work builds on what came before.” - Austin Kleon.
I have heard this before, but I think I would still benefit from systemically applying it to myself.
My current main creative project - over than my blog - is a book of my photography for an assessment in creative arts at school. The requirements for the final product assessment were that it needs to show meaning and that you need to document the process of it. I did actually consider a photography vlog similar to Grainy Days. However I am more confident in my ability to sequence a book than my ability to script a mini-documentay / vlog video. And the assignment is not about finding new skills but about creating meaning in art.
So where is the inspiration that I am building off come from for this book? How can I apply Imperfect's concept of remixing to this?
I own 2 photography books; Australian Geographic Nature Photographer Of The Year 2025, and David Bryne's Voyage Of Discovery.
What is it about these books that make me want to make my own? To start off with I love photography as an art medium, and a book seems to be one of the more accessible ways of exhibiting the art? An actual art exhibit is far too expensive for my level and I already have an online folio with my own custom masonry grid.
Also, David Bryne's book is built off a single expressed meaning, in this case the embodiment of absurd things in the world. A book having a goal and being tangible makes it much more apealing to me than an online folio organised into mini-series similarly to teo crawford.
How can I leverage others works to help me build my own rather than reinventing the wheel?
At the very least I do know the story I will tell. Slowness and reflection, to take a step back and think and enjoy thinking and enjoy small moments.
