Thoughts Of A Guy Named Mason

Who is spying on me?

The digital age has bought many things to the world. Notably a massive increase in surveillance as a tool. When you are on the internet there are numerous things tracking everything you do; From your ISP to the service you are using, people and organisations scraping the servers your data is on for all use cases.

Knowing this makes me wonder what are the true consequences of this? I am going to skip straight past most questions of privacy. I am not talking about should my data be private(It should be) but rather what impacts does my public data have?

I am sure that everyone has heard that employers look across the social media of recruits. But does anyone go deeper? I would assume the average employer wouldn't. However I have heard an anecdote that the Australian Defence Force manages to scrape servers for private social media accounts as well as public ones. If they are going to that level of surveillance, then surely they would be able to trace someones blog back to them?

I currently have a forwarding address on my contact page. But I don't imagine it particularly difficult to send a payload to that forwarding address that can track the email address it gets forwarded to? I don't know where in the email forwarding pipeline there would be remote code execution? But what if they just find a way to access every single persons emails on a server and find one that is getting emails from the aforementioned forwarding address?
